Sadly I know very little about reversing main engines, and nothing to do with ships. However, I have a little info to do with the engines of a british patrol baot in WW1 which had a procedure that I think of at at least slow and awkward, and possibly disastrous. So I was looking in this video to see if I could figure out what was actually being done, to what and where one function ends and another begins. I failed, and the few other comments I saw did not help me interpret this. So let me tell you of the old story I do have. It was written down by the chief engineer on a WW1 80' Elco patrol craft. Fitted with a STANDARD brand engine running a mixture of gasoline and kerosene. To reverse the craft required the engines be shut down to dead stop. Then the valve grear was switched over somehow, enabling the engines to be fired up in reverse. There was no clutch, no gear-box, so they also had to cast off before starting, while hoping the temperamental starting engines would fire up without delay. So I wonder? Are there direct drive ship engines too? Would love some subtitle descriptions.
